Replacement Glass for Grave Lanterns: Quick Help for a Dignified Monument Appearance

Grave lanterns and stone lamps are exposed to harsh conditions that can lead to damage of their glass panels. Although the body of the lantern itself is often solid and durable, the clear glass is its most vulnerable part. Broken glass not only disrupts the aesthetics of the gravesite but also fails to fulfill its primary function – protecting the candle flame from wind and rain.

Why does glass most often crack or break?

There are several factors behind the damage to lantern panels:

  • Inappropriate candle selection: A flame that is too high or intense can locally overheat the glass. If the flame is too close to the glass wall, thermal shock occurs, leading to subsequent cracking.

  • Adverse weather: Strong wind gusts can topple free-standing lanterns, or falling branches may strike them during storms. Extreme frost combined with moisture also weakens the structure of older glass.

  • Maintenance accidents: Breakage often occurs during the cleaning of the tombstone or during the careless replacement of a burnt-out candle, when the glass is accidentally struck by a metal lighter or another object.

  • Wildlife and birds: In cemeteries located near forests, it happens that deer or birds strike the lantern while searching for food or water, causing damage.

  • Vandalism: Unfortunately, mechanical damage caused by third parties is also a frequent reason why a replacement is necessary.
